When Valos finds Draggert he is unconscious after having been savaged by one of the rasters. Pivel is muttering to himself saying it wasn’t supposed to be like this. Valos slaps Pivel and he takes off running. Concerned for Draggert’s safety Valos urges the crewmen to get Draggert off the ship or at least below decks.
With that done Valos makes his way back down heading for his room to grab their equipment. On the way he runs into Milo and Myra who tell him that Decurro went over the side and down into the cargo hold. Knowing that even Decurro’s best-laid plans are often dicey at best Valos goes down to help Decurro.
After a brief conversation with Decurro, Valos’s idea is to grab as many crystals as possible and put them on the boat. Decurro begins shooting his harpoon gun while Valos moves towards the guy with the rod. Deftly moving himself into position, Decurro score a hit on the birdman causing him to drop the rod, which falls in front of Valos. Snatching up the rod, Valos launches himself at the birdman and kills him with a mighty blow.
At that point the other raiders run away as Valos and Decurro begin slapping crystals all over the ship. Unfortunately the ship is much too large and the crystals are unable to make it float, so they move the crystals to the pontoon instead. That works, sort of, and the ship rights itself ever so slightly. With the cargo secure they make their way back topside.
Myra is able to use her ability to speak with the dead to “talk” with one of the dead birdmen. It says that they came to take the magic and take it back to the nest. They also learn that the birdmen make deals with people and they are sent information.
The group decides to head over to the island to investigate. They land on a small rocky shore that ends abruptly at the heavy woods covering the island. Decurro notices a small mountainous area sees about a dozen rasters perched there. Further down the beach they spy three birdmen collecting cargo and loading it into nets. Two of them fly off leaving the third guy alone to continue collecting cargo.
