The Heretic’s Bane exits the warp and begins a slow approach towards Footfall. A scan of the area reveals that the cruiser of Rogue Trader Harstack does not appear to be present. Upon completion of docking the crew is greeted by the harbormaster who informs them that Rogue Trader Zarkov is currently in command of Footfall and has been so for the past 5 months. It appears that Zarkov has an inflated sense of honor and while duels are not uncommon, carrying long arms is prohibited on the station.
The command crew splits up with Rogue Trader Hallerman and Kayne heading to the local watering hole and Jarnan and Emmaus heading to the Temple complex. At the cantina one of Hallerman’s agents comes in and to apprise them of the situation. It is rumored that Zarkov has been dealing in illicit goods, hence his long period of inactivity on Footfall, and that he may have been the one who originally discovered the artifact.
The artifact was discovered while excavating a site of ancient xenos ruins. It was easily found as the artifact was still powered. Already slightly unhinged, once in possession of the artifact Harstack began to act even more strangely and he has since disappeared.
Jarnan and Emmaus meet with a mid-level functionary of the Ecclesiarchy. They find out that Zarkov and Harstack had a falling out. It seems that Harstack cheated Zarkov and fled. The priest confirms that the artifact appears to be powered by some foul xenos technology and that it should of course be destroyed. He provides the name of a fence who s active on Footfall who may be able to provide more information.
